After 72 grueling holes of golf, Graeme McDowell got back to where he started on Thursday afternoon: even par. Seems like a lot of effort to stay in the same place, right?
Well, fortunately for him, nobody else in the field could even manage that feat, not even the likes of Tiger and Phil, who both had rounds of 66 earlier in the tournament, and Ernie Els, who briefly took the lead in the final round before also collapsing under the immense pressure that the U.S. Open so gleefully brings each year.
Here's a very nice account of the tournament's last day and it's eventual winner: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/20/AR2010062003905.html.
One thing I can't help but admire about McDowell is how happy he was to simply appreciate the beauty surrounding him even while walking through what appeared to be golfing hell. It is certainly a valuable reminder for us during those periods of adversity in our own lives. Sometimes you've just got to take a step back, take a breath and count your blessings.
So congratulations to the short, scruffy Northern Irishman - a job well done, sir! Now you can go home and have a pint or two.
And what about the big hug from his dad!
